Thalia Dee Brown
Lovingly memorialized by Eric Brown on September 26, 2020
Thalia Dee Brown, a Denver psychotherapist with a specialty in addiction and trauma abuse, died at Sunrise at Cherry Creek on August 18, 2020 at the age of 87. She was a prominent member of the York Street Club and other Denver AA groups where she was always ready to volunteer as a sponsor.
Born and raised in Kansas City, Mo., Dee was the daughter of artists Cecil and Blanche Carstenson. She attended Missouri Valley College and returned to KC to marry William S. Brown at the age of 20. Dee was a loving mother to their children Laura, Eric, and Tony Brown, who survive her along with her ex-husband Bill and her late brother Blue’s children David Carstenson and Cindy Kalinoski.
In the late 50’s, Dee and Bill moved to New York City and other East Coast locales before settling with their family in Greenwood, Mo. In 1959. In 1966, the family moved to Kansas City.
When not running the Brown household, Dee attended classes at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and earned a BA degree in Sociology. She volunteered for community groups, including co-managing an interracial Fellowship House community center. She and the family ran the KC office of Eugene McCarthy’s presidential campaign and she often hosted “seminars” with friends to discuss current events. At home, Dee was a loving mother and one of the best cooks in the neighborhood. She baked bread and cooked up exotic Mediterranean and Asian dishes well before it became fashionable.
In 1971, the family moved to Denver’s Congress Park neighborhood. Over the years, Dee volunteered at the library, community groups, and with political campaigns including Pat Schroeder’s first primary campaign. After her divorce in 1978, Dee started attending AA meetings at the York Street Club and celebrated her first AA “birthday” in 1980. For several years she lived with her partner Carlos Valenzuela, an artist and York Street member.
In 1991, Dee earned a Master of Arts degree in Psychology and Counseling from Boulder Graduate School. After working several years for a therapy practice, she started her own practice specializing in addiction and trauma abuse. In the ‘90s she specialized in ritual abuse cases and published a handbook on the subject.
Dee was a skilled and empathetic listener and helped her clients take control of their lives. After hours, she volunteered at York Street. Despite the tragic stories she heard every day, she was always known for her optimism and playful sense of humor.
Dee loved to drive up to the mountains in her Fiat 124 sportscar. For several decades she owned a cabin that she and her family helped build up at 11,500 feet under Horseshoe Mountain near Fairplay. Dee loved caring for her canine pets, starting with the family dog Andy, and moving on to Booblah, Chuck, Pandora, Sam, and Molly. She enjoyed traveling with friends, including trips to Mexico, Europe, and Dubai. When she traveled to Europe with her mother Blanche, they learned to reconcile their differences and accept each other as friends.
Most of all, she enjoyed the company of her many friends and visits from her children and grandchildren. In the early years her three kids lived in the San Francisco Bay Area before Eric took off to the East Coast and Tony moved back to Colorado. Dee flew out for visits and to attend the weddings of her sons Eric and Tony. She helped Eric and his wife Cindy care for Dee’s newborn grandchildren Cecilia and Isabela.
When Dee bought her house on Holly Street in the early years of the Millennium, she rediscovered her love of gardening with the help of her friend Robbie Burt. In 2016, Dee moved into Sunrise Assisted Living where her mother Blanche had spent her last years. Despite a battle with dementia, Dee lived a rich life until the Covid-19 lock-down of 2020. She enjoyed chatting with her Sunrise neighbors and she often ventured out with her best friend Genelle Hamaker, who would drive her to AA meetings, visits with friends, and to her beloved Rocky Mountains.
Dee sponsored and inspired many AA members over her 41 years of sobriety in AA. Her wisdom and heart live on in the recovery of many sponsee’s, grand sponsee’s, great grand sponsee’s and Friends in the program.
A Friend writes: “Dee’s unconditional devotion to helping others was steadfast and endearing
She helped people realize they are not alone and that they don’t have to live in fear.”
York Street Club plans hold a memorial meeting for Dee at some point in the future. In addition, the family will gather to honor Dee and release her ashes in the summer of 2021.

Russell Sapel
Lovingly memorialized by Jenifer Sapel on September 20, 2020
On Saturday September 12, 2020 at home and surrounded by family, Russell O. Sapel took his final breath. Born in Plattsburgh, NY to Tida & Robert Sapel. He adored Plattsburgh, but followed his hero and brother Wayne into the Navy in 1964. There he served 3 well-decorated years in Vietnam, earning a Bronze Star with Valor and 2 Purple Hearts. Like so many surprises Russ had in store, after coming home from war, he built a successful career in the beauty supply business in CA. He then rounded out his working years in the software business; spending much of his last decades working from home in his bathrobe, where the coffee was on all day, & his diet consisted mainly of cigarettes. The job he did best of all was father where he taught his kids to work hard, pay attention, look for the good and never give up.
Russ was not the handiest of men. “Fixing” something often meant copious amounts of JB Weld or duct tape. He wasn’t particularly great at following rules either, he once went 15 years without filing a tax return (to which when asked he replied, “what are they going to do? Paint my face green, drop me into a jungle and tell me to survive?”). His superpowers were all things related to people. His legacy is demonstrating unconditional love. Russ was the best kind of sales guy, he lived the Zig Ziglar quote “If you help enough people get what they want, you’ll get what you want.” He was the kind of guy who could say anything to anyone and get away with it. This came in handy as he negotiated deals at flea markets and garage sales always on the look-out for more Rogers Bros First Love patterned silver, often bringing home random purchases he thought others would enjoy.
Russ was preceded by his parents, brothers Robert & Wayne, and sister Iona. He is survived by his wife Holly, children Jenifer, Tiffany, and Jordan and grandchildren Ana, Melvin & Ransom as well as beloved nieces, nephews and card playing friends. COVID-19 is allowing him to execute one of his final wishes; not to be made a big deal out of. He will be honored at Tahoma National Cemetery on Thursday Sept 24th; no reception will be held.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Navy Seal Foundation:
https://www.navysealfoundation.org/donate/
& think of him anytime you enjoy a cup of coffee or game of cribbage.
Please help us honor him with your favorite memories and pictures, appropriateness need not apply. Share them here....

Jenny Ramos
Lovingly memorialized by Benjamin Cossich on September 16, 2020
To everyone who may not yet have heard the news, our dear friend Jenny Ramos passed away last night. Elizabeth, Daniel and John were with her when he passed, along side her family but are devastated.
Funeral plans are still being arranged, and any updates regarding locations and times will be posted here. However we do know that you need to make sure you have your Barcelona (BARCA) football shirts ready!
Jenny wished to have a simple funeral, but a big party afterwards (always the life of the party!)
We have already had numerous emails, texts and messages from people asking how to help, So here it is!
As you are all aware, due to Jennys illness she has been unable to work for several months and John has been his full-time carer as well as dad to Elizabeth and Daniel – this has created a huge financial worry and something I am certain we can all do something to help with.
If you would like to donate, just click on the donate button and donate whatever you can. If you are not able to donate don’t forget you can still leave messages and comments for John and the kids to read.
Lets give Jenny the send off she deserves!

Tony Bifano
Lovingly memorialized by The Bifano Family on September 16, 2020
Anthony Bifano, 77, passed peacefully in his home on September 14th, 2020 in Fort Salonga, New York.
Tony was born on February 9, 1943 and grew up in Ozone Park. Being a foster child shaped his formative years and his thoughtful, sentimental demeanor. He started his business, Tony M. Bifano Plumbing & Heating, at a young age and soon thereafter became the forever loving husband of Susan.
He’s remembered for his faithful romanticism, 45 years of marriage, and nearly 60 years dedicated to his trade and loyal customers - many of whom he considered family.
For those of us who have been blessed to share a moment or memory with him, we know his enthusiasm for life was infectious and he was as resilient as they come.
Tony was known for his huge hugs, warm welcomes, funny expressions and notorious splits on the dance floor (which left his kids running for the door). He was a lover of garage sale hopping with Susan, Christmas traditions, poker with the boys, train shows, and sending Hallmark cards for every. single. holiday.
To know “Pop Pop Tony” is to know his love of happy things: Lionel trains, antique cars, Disney memorabilia, larger-than-life Christmas decorations, and every lyric to the Righteous Brothers.
On the side of their Catskill home reads a sign that says “Tony and Susan’s L’il Bit of Heaven”: their home away from home nestled on a lush landscape with the warmest memories echoing and enveloping those who visit within the magic of the mountains. It’s heaven on earth indeed and the perfect place for him to be laid to rest. How fortunate we all were to have had a little bit of heaven here, with him on earth.
Tony will be missed dearly by his wife, Susan; and three children, Stacey (Daniel) Kaufmann, Michael (Kelly) Bifano, and Autumn (Frank) Callahan; as well as eight grandchildren; Adryanna, Vienna, Anderson, Hagen, Dylan, Marjorie, Lucas, Suzie and furry children, Ben and Heidi.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to St. Jude Children’s hospital in Anthony’s name or crank up some holiday music or Doo-Wop tunes and sing along in remembrance.

Sophia Chiuchiolo
Lovingly memorialized by Bridget & Paul Chiuchiolo on September 14, 2020
Our sweet Sophia Marie passed from this world to the other side on February 12, 2020. Ever since Sophia's arrival on April 24, 2005, she has brought so much joy to our lives with her beautiful smile, bubbly personality, and kind heart. Her artistic abilities and diverse interests allowed us to cheer her on with many endeavors- art and pottery classes, horseback riding, piano and guitar, dance, cheer, and tennis. Sophia's love of fashion was evident in her room decor, closet, and book collection of designers. Anyone who knows Sophia also knows of her passion for K-pop (especially Black Pink and BTS), Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes, and Ed Sheeran. We have many special memories of attending concerts as a family.
Those who know Sophia often used the word “sweet” to describe her. She cared deeply for her family and friends. We are fortunate to have experienced Sophia's exceptional mind, diverse talents, unparalleled beauty, and tender heart for fourteen beautiful years. As you listen to the music of Sophia’s heartbeat with one of her favorite BTS songs, remember Sophia. May Sophia's kind and gentle heart inspire you to also be kind and gentle.
Though Paul, Isabel, and I must learn to live with the unimaginable loss of our beloved Sophia, we know she lives on in each of our hearts. She is bringing light to the universe with her radiant smile and gentle spirit.
All we see is light for forever
'Cause the sun shines bright for forever
We could be all right for forever this way...
