Bill loved a good party, so we're going to throw him one! Bill's desire to make sure everyone else was having a good time outlasts him in his final farewell to friends and family who loved him. He wanted a celebration of life, with good food, good memories, and the best that life has to offer. Please come celebrate the mark he made on the world, with a few good "Bill Stories" to share, a glass of crown on the rocks, and your best dance moves.

In lieu of flowers, our family is requesting donations be made in Bill's honor to The First Tee https://www.thefirstteeseattle.org/ . Bill donated his time for several decades to youth sports, and was an avid golf fan. He couldn't wait to get his own grandchildren into golf.

The Story

William (Bill) Nelson, 11/8/1954-4/5/2017

Bill loved people- none more than his wife, daughters, and grandkids. Escaping his tales of their perfection was nearly impossible- even for complete strangers. He never left a conversation without an I love you and a hug that lingered for hours- not only because he was so genuine, but also because he routinely used more than the suggested amount of cologne. Anyone who knew him could agree that he had a big heart, and that, in the end, is what unexpectedly took his life.

Bill was a legend in his own right- at least in Ballard, where he spent his whole life. He believed if you couldn’t get it in Ballard, you didn’t need it. He took fashion cues from no one. He felt Levis were appropriate for all occasions, shirts were optional and Pooka shells pulled any outfit together. His favorite past times included yelling at the refs through the TV, giving unsolicited advice, and fixing any broken item, MacGyver style, with nothing more than epoxy and zip ties.

His heaven was Camano Island, where he spent hours raking the beach, fishing with his grandkids, and telling stories by the fire about the “roads we walk in life.” He is survived by his wife Linda, his daughter Keely (Chris), daughter Ashley (Chris) and alleged “favorite daughter” Chelsey. He leaves behind his mother Bea, 2 brothers and 3 sisters. He will live on forever as a superhero to his pride and joy- his 4 grandchildren- Annabelle, Hunter, Carter & Andrew.

I knew Bill from parties, not school since I went to Ingraham (’73) but Ballard & Ingraham partied together a lot! I never knew him well, but he DID always have a smile on his face; his warmth was genuine. Back in the early 80s Steve Menne bought a house across the street from my parents’ home, (where I grew up) on 77th Street. I knew Steve lived there, had dropped by to say hi, but I didn’t know that Bill also lived there for a while; I’m not sure how long. One day Mom mentioned how much she and Daddy enjoyed Steve’s friend, Bill ~ apparently he came across the street to introduce himself and then they all realized that Bill knew me, through partying! That’s just the type of guy Bill was; so friendly and respectful to his elders that he made a good impression on my parents too, lots of guys would ignore two old people who lived across the street, but Bill was truly a friend to all. He will be missed by so many whose lives he touched.

Our hearts break with the passing of a great neighbor. I miss waking up to the sound of a 9 iron connecting with whiffle golf balls, of parking strips being converted into fairways and half painted houses being completed by Linda. Going to miss you Bill.

Bill was one of my best friends, more like family, really. We had some great times together. Much like the rows we walk in life Bill also loved to talk about life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. He will be missed.
