The Story
ROBERT FRANK AGUIAR
February 26, 1936 – March 6, 2017
Bob was much beloved and as much an institution in Whitmore as the post office, general store and the Cow Creek Plateau, having moved there 25 years ago to live closer to grandchildren and to escape the congestion and cold fog of his early years in the Bay Area.
In a career dedicated to moving and shaping the earth, he found many years of happiness restoring national forestlands damaged by fire. Among his experiences, he was most happy outdoors operating heavy equipment as an Operating Engineer, and left his mark on iconic projects throughout California including water conservation reservoirs, skate parks, baseball fields, golf courses, countless residential developments, and college campus features.
He served as sergeant in the California Army National Guard during the Korean War era. Later in life he participated in dozens of backcountry tours as a member of the Redding Jeep Club, with Carolyn, his wife of 61 years, by his side.
Bob’s infectious love of baseball inspired each of his kids and also his wife to join a uniformed team at one time or another, and even delivered him a brief career as right fielder for the St Louis Cardinals AAA.
His greatest joy came from spending time with his large family, imbued with his love of sports, zany sense of adventure, overarching fairness – and a trademark stubbornness – that distinguish his family legacy.
Bob peacefully entered into rest on March 6, 2017 after a two year battle with cancer. He is survived by Carolyn and their six children – Laura, Patti, Jim, Joe, John and Mike – his sister Betty, brother Ray, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, Bob would be happy to know of your contribution to the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital Foundation (www.stjude.org).
I really, really, really hope I see you again Dad. John Aguiar
