The Story
Juanita E. Pinkney (née Jacobs), of Southeast Washington, DC, age 71, was surrounded by family when she passed away peacefully in Chula Vista, CA on Monday, January 25, 2016.
Juanita was the last of seven children born to Erma and Tillman Jacobs in southern New Jersey on October 29, 1944. After her graduation from Woodstown High School, she attended Delaware State College, and then Bowie State University to prepare for her career in education. She worked as classroom teacher and Reading Specialist in the Washington, DC and Prince George’s County school systems for over 40 years until her retirement in 2009, and was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, the international organization for professional educators. She had a great passion for education and for travel. She enjoyed spending the holidays with her family on a beach in a Caribbean island. With her family, she traveled to over 20 countries, including trips to the Greek Isles, Egypt, and South Africa.
Juanita was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Ella, Etta, James, Marvin, and Donald. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Alfonso; daughter, Mardi (Randy); granddaughter, Adara; sister, Dorothy; granddog, Callie; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A service, officiated by Rev. Kip Banks, will be held at 12:30pm on Saturday, April 23 at Ft. Lincoln Funeral Home, 3401 Bladensburg Road, Brentwood, Maryland, to celebrate Juanita’s life and legacy. Memorial donations may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America or to the Phi Delta Kappa Educators Rising program.
Her warm nature and supportive spirit (and snazzy style!) will be truly missed.
