Gary Hansen, 62, passed away unexpectedly on February 4, 2015 of respiratory arrest due to ascites due to adenocarcinoma of unknown origin.

Gary is survived by his father, 2 daughters, and 1 son.

Gary Hansen was born on January 8, 1953 in Brookings SD. In 1988 he moved to Tucson, AZ and started working as a truck driver. He worked at Saia Freight for many years before his diagnosis of cancer. He was a fan of NASCAR and was a member of the Corvette Club of Arizona.

The Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit this page and honor my Dad with your respects. I realize it's taken a while to get this up and running, but it's also taken a long time to truly process that he's gone. Gone in the physical sense at least. I know he's made such a powerful and lasting impression on us, which has left us much better people. I know that if nothing else, he will live on within all of us through the lessons he's taught us. There's always his love of NASCAR and American iron too, to remind us of him. Perhaps it was the pleasure of driving his Vettes and the truck that kept him so happy... something to think about I suppose!

I can see the effect he's had on everyone. I see the appreciation of simple things and the importance of being humble in my brother Brandon. I see the incredible respect in everyone's faces from his Job at Saia. I could especially see the pain in everyone's eyes at Tucson Meadows, when we that short memorial service. You all showed in your face that we know the world has lost someone great, but also that my Dad left us with awesome stories to laugh about and remember fondly. I also saw that his great friend, Joe there at Tucson Meadows, cared so much for him; so much that not seeing him or hearing from him for a day quickly led to serious concern. If he hadn't been so concerned and called the police, it could have easily taken much longer for someone to find him. Thank you so much for that, Joe. Thank you all so much for honoring him in your own way.

I know that I'm not really in a position to make a request from you, but if I had to make one, it's simply to think about him every now and then. To remember the honorable things he's done, the great lessons he's taught us all, and most of all - his selfless nature. If we all continue to remember these things, we'll undoubtedly make the world a better place. I know that's what he would have wanted. Well, that and for Tony Stewart to pick up some more wins!
